Scratches on eyeglass lenses are a common problem for many eyeglass wearers. Most of the current eyeglass lens materials are resin, and glasses wear a long time; there is no guarantee that wear will occur; to throw them away is a pity, but wear is uncomfortable.

Scratches and wear on eyeglass lenses can be repaired; before that, it should be noted that if the prescription eyeglass lenses are worn out, it is not recommended to repair them; the surface of the lenses will not only affect the aesthetics but also directly related to the health of vision.

How do scratches on eyeglasses lenses affect our vision?

1. More scratches will reduce the light transmission of the lens, and vision will be blurred and dark. Compared with new eyeglasses lenses, scratched glasses are not as clear and transparent to see things clearly and brightly, and easy to trigger visual fatigue.

2. Scratched eyeglass lenses are particularly prone to losing the lens coatings and can lead to inaccurate lens prescriptions. A detached lens will affect the protective function of the lens, such as not blocking the entry of harmful blue light, weakening the UV protection, and weakening the anti-reflective function of the lens.

3. Scratched lenses that are not clear to see can induce eye adjustments and also cause dry eyes and astringency.

Repair of scratched eye lenses

The best way to repair scratched eye lenses is to replace them with new glasses or eyeglass lenses. Cheap glasses online with high quality are from $6 only. If you can't replace your glasses right away for various reasons, you can try the following ways to repair scratched lenses.

A. Toothpaste

Using a little non-abrasive toothpaste on a prepared cotton or soft wool cloth, gently wipe the lens, using the cloth in a circular motion over the scratches of the lens. The action lasts about 10 seconds. Rinse with cold water and wipe dry. The above process may have to be repeated for slightly severe scratches until the scratch is completely removed. (It is best to use particle-free toothpaste.)

B. Baking Soda

Make a thick paste with baking soda and water 1:1. Then apply the paste with a soft cotton or wool cloth and gently wipe with circular motions. Rinse and dry the lens. Again, this process may have to be repeated for deeper or stubborn scratches. It can also be done this way. (Same action as A above)

C. Glass etchant

Apply to scratches on plastic glasses, do not use it on the glass as it may further damage the lens. The active ingredient of this agent, hydrofluoric acid, eliminates scratches on plastic lenses. Apply a thick layer of this agent to the scratches on the lenses and let the glasses sit for 5 minutes. Rinse and dry afterward. Please be careful not to rub the agent into the gap between the lens and the frame.

D. Vehicle cleaning waxes

Cleaning wax is usually used to polish cars, but it can also fill and remove scratches from glass and plastic glasses. Gently wipe with a clean, soft cloth until the scratches are removed. It is a good idea to have several cloths on hand, as wax can easily adhere to the top of the wiping cloth and needs to be replaced several times.

E. Windshield Water Repellent

A windshield water repellent for windshield wipers, although it can also be used to eliminate scratches on glasses. As an added benefit, it also protects against dust and moisture and prevents glasses from fogging up when the temperature changes. Simply wipe gently with a soft cloth for a few seconds. This method is better suited for surface spots and may not be effective for deep penetrating scratches.

Eyeglasses Maintenance

In addition to ways to repair eyeglass lenses, it is also recommended that you pay attention to maintenance when using glasses

Rinsing with clean water

Open the faucet, and rinse the lenses with running water. If the lenses are dirty, you can clean the lenses with the help of diluted detergent, wash them clean, and use a glasses cloth to absorb the water. Note that it is absorbing dry!

Use more glasses cases

When not wearing glasses, please wrap them in glasses cloth and put them in the glasses case. When storing, please avoid contact with corrosive items such as insect repellents, toiletries, cosmetics, hairspray, and medicines. Otherwise, it will cause deterioration and discoloration of lenses and frames.

Proper placement of eyeglasses

When temporarily placing your glasses, placing them with the convex side facing up is best. If you put them with the convex side facing down, you will likely scratch and wear out the lenses. Do not place them in direct sunlight or hot places such as the front window of the driver's cab. The heat can easily lead to overall distortion and deformation of the glasses or cracking of the film layer on the surface.
